“You see things that are; and say ’Why?’
But I dream things that never were; and say ‘Why not?’ ~ George Bernard Shaw
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is the study of human excellence and communication. NLP provides us with the tools to run our own brain and manage our states, emotions and behaviours. It involves looking at how you do what you do and, if you are not getting the results you want, how you can create change by learning a new pattern or strategy through copying successful behaviour.
“The co-founders, Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder, claimed that NLP would be instrumental in "finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives. They coined the term "Neuro-Linguistic Programming" to denote their belief in a connection between neurological processes ("neuro"), language ("linguistic") and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience ("programming") and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life.
Neuro-linguistic programming was originally promoted by its co-founders in the 1970s as an effective and rapid form of psychological therapy, capable of addressing the full range of problems that psychologists are likely to encounter, such as phobias, depression, habit disorder, psychosomatic illnesses, and learning disorders. It also espoused the potential for self-determination through overcoming learned limitations and emphasized well-being and healthy functioning.
Later, it was promoted as a "science of excellence", derived from the study or "modeling" of how successful or outstanding people in different fields obtain their results. It was claimed that these skills can be learned by anyone to improve one's effectiveness both personally and professionally.” (Extract from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-linguistic_programming)
So let's put this into layman's terms - Your emotions are controlled by your focus or mindset (we covered an Empowering Mindset last week); your language or self talk and your physiology (physical state). You will notice successful people have the focus, language and physiology of ‘excellence’ and through modeling you can too.
The “Physiology of Excellence" is the ability to elicit your desired behaviours and generate the most beneficial emotion (state of being). The ability to discover, illicit the patterns of, and utilise excellent behaviour in yourself and others will postively influence your consistent achievement of your specific and desired life outcomes. Through modelling, you can find and reproduce excellent behaviour. You can even inspire and instill this in others using the theory of: "Anything you can do, I can copy and do it too.
Next week we'll look at how your thoughts and language create your reality, so stay tuned...
